The controlled substances of Eyr are known to be highly powerful or rare items, also known as Deus Ex Machina items. They are not easily attainable, and must be regulated to ensure the balance of sim dynamics. Should they not be regulated and the sim be flooded with these items -- it would cause a vast imbalance, many unhappy roleplayers, and a big problem. Case in point -- if everyone ran around with a mithril sword it would be both unrealistic and also unfair. Additionally the importance of such rare items is mitigated if everyone has them. Though the below items are regulated, does not mean that only special people have access to them. Some items are forbidden entirely (never allowed in-game), where others are restricted (only allowed under admin approval or special circumstances) and others are controlled (allowed, but with limitations).

What is Deus Ex Machina? The textbook definition is: a plot device whereby a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object. Deus Ex Machina items in Eyr are not only problem solvers -- they are plot-killers. Why is killing a plot a bad thing? The point of roleplay, why we all do this, is to weave a story and keep the storytelling yarn flowing. If at every turn the ultimate deus ex machina pops up, the story ends and we all go home. Ensuring the items are rare affords us a dynamic where often times things don't go as we like them to and the plot thickens and continues on.

Restricted:

Restricted items require admin approval to possess & may be legitimately gained through the Myst of Eyr’s Token Achievement System.

  • Adamantite / Adamantine +

    AdamantineRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Adamantine is highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item, and expensive. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this substance.

Named for its diamond-like hardness, adamantine is a deep-crust mineral that forms the basis of ‘indestructible’ objects of legend. The greenish-grey ore occasionally crops up in the bottoms of volcanic chasms on the ocean floor, where it is quite difficult to remove due to its great weight and density - which is several times more so than the same volume of steel.

    Weight & Durability

“Very Heavy, but you might as well be using a God’s Fist”

Adamantine is a painful metal in more than one way, unfortunately most of them are towards a wielder of any such weapon. One of few known things to damage adamantine is something else made of adamantine, but the cost of this is that the metal is far heavier than anything else of a similar size - rendering its use by common humanoid races extremely difficult. Even those of giantkind barely make use of large quantities of this metal. For this reason, it is far more common to see a stylized ball or slab of adamantine mounted to a shaft of some other metal for use as a hammer or sledge.

    Forging & Maintenance

If you happen to come across a weapon in this manner made of adamantine, lucky you! You will never need to repair it... unless the weight of the adamantine head breaks the shaft. Or you hit an adamantine door with it. On the other hand, however, your blacksmith hates you. Crafting complex shapes or fine detail with adamantine is nearly impossible due to a high resistance to heat and a very high melting point. Every few strikes with a mallet would require the smith to return to the fires to reheat the metal before continuing.

  • Catsbane +

Flash PowderRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Catsbane is highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this substance.

Ada Pyre, an orchid commonly given the name “Catsbane” due to its knack at injuring wild cats, is highly effective at dealing with the supernatural Bastet and claims its disastrous effects to those that contact it. While still dangerous to all creatures, it impacts the Feline-Shifters the most.

    General Toxicity

Handling or being exposed to this flowering plant can still cause harmful effects to those not of Bastet origin. Unprotected contact can lead to burning and tingling sensations, and ingesting the plant in most forms cause symptoms the same or similar to those of aconite including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Heavier doses act similarly to aconite, leading to potential paralysis which could prove fatal if it paralyzes the heart.

    Bastet Allergy

Bastet have an innate weakness to this lily, with the scents it puts out being a strong disrupter of the their senses. The general effects of the plant effect Bastet much the same, though only in fresh leaf form. Hanging dried Ada Pyre orchids is typically a warning to Bastet that catsbane could be in use, and holds little effect other than a deterring scent and instigating a minor reaction of watery or itchy eyes and mouth. Coming near or in contact with the fresh leaves or blossoms can cause more extreme effects in addition to the normal symptoms, such as a loss of scent, taste, or cloudy vision. Stronger doses or lengthy exposure can also bring about extreme muscular pain, shortness of breath, and heavy perspiration. Due to its harmful properties, being close to or affected by catsbane makes it difficult to gather/maintain the focus necessary to use a Bastet gift as well as disrupt the shape-shifting process. This latter effect may be of some use to those hunting Bastet.

    Scarcity, Harvesting, and Preparation

Much like all orchids, Ada Pyre is a plant that is very fickle regarding the right environmental conditions in order to flourish. Cultivating it is a painstakingly arduous process, which requires a knowledgeable herbalist to tend to the capricious needs of the plant and not fall ill in the process. Finding Ada Pyre in the wild is nearly unheard of, because Bastet will raise entire swaths of jungle with fire in order to destroy any discovered orchid clusters. Additionally, because the plant only holds its greatest effect upon Bastet when freshly picked, it would be difficult to grow and sustain such a crop as well as hazardous to the tender’s health. Due to this, catsbane is more likely to be harvested and dried for its use as a deterrent rather than to be actively used as a weapon.

  • Corpse Lotus +

Corpse LotusRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Corpse Lotus is highly powerful, and it is also intended to be a rare item. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this substance.

Known known for its repugnant smell far more vile than Flowering Death. Even rarer as it was originally a native plant of D’vi, though a few were smuggled off island prior to it being destroyed. This plant can ward off or even poison the undead. The effects almost immediate. The smell is so detestable it acts as a ward and repellent, driving away the undead and distracting them to the point where it becomes impossible to concentrate to perform magic casting or maintaining illusions. Effects of such plant to undead include: Substantial reduction of magic use, heavily interrupted concentration, destruction of illusions, feeling their existence is fading away, apprehension, and mental frenzy. A risky journey to obtain such a rare plant has lead most to perish.

  • Dragonsbane +

    DragonsbaneRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Dragonsbane is highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item - Dragons in Eyr are intended to be powerful creatures and it would be unrealistic for every character to possess dragonsbane. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this substance.

This unassuming weed, possessing a thick fernish stem, prickly leaves, and a white puffy head, it actually a toxic herb known as Dragonsbane. Once thought extinct within Eyr, two samples survive in secret and continue to blossom. While able to cause illness to most any creature, this plant gets its name from the greatly exaggerated effect it holds upon Dragonkin.

    General Toxicity

It would take quite a powerful poison to fell a dragon and this is no exception. Even to those not of dragonkind, this plant possesses very harmful toxins in its stems and leaves. Contact causes sensations of burning and tingling, and consumption first manifests with numbness in the mouth and face and burning in the abdomen. Larger doses typically produce motor weakness and tingling and numbness spreading to the limbs. In all cases, other symptoms such as sweating, dizziness, difficulty breathing, headache and confusion usually occur.

    Draconic Allergy

Dragons, regardless of any resistance to poisonings, have an innate weakness to the secretions of this plant. The scents and pollens put out by the plant is enough to cause dragons unease and closeness to the source brings forth sinus congestion and a dry throat that can make speech, roaring and even utilizing a breath weapon difficult. Further exposure to this plant also causes its regular symptoms to affect Dragonkind to an amplified degree. For example, they may experience startling pain and muscle weakness as well as temporary limb paralysis instead of minor burning/tingling and numbness. Dragons may also experience further dulled senses and a drain on their concentration preventing them from being able to shapeshift.

    Scarcity, Harvesting, and Preparation

Dragonsbane is one of the slowest-growing plants in Eyr, taking decades to mature much like one would expect of a dragon. If both of the last-living plants in Eyr were to be harvested, dried and prepared, there would remain only ⅛th of an ounce of usable Dragonsbane toxin. In order to avoid killing the last two remaining plants a clever herbologist would know that only the tiniest cuttings could be taken for harvesting.

  • Hellfire +

    HellfireRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Hellfire is highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this substance.

Spell-scroll imbued - enough to ignite a single flame Single yet powerful flame (fits in palm of hand) of demonic origin, conjured from the abyssal plane. Imbued to a spell scroll for safe holding, hellfire may be used to assault a person or place and is particularly useful in countering holy attack. Hellfire causes severe burn wounds that can be considered cursed; spreading infection and corruption, and therefore needing specialist treatment and recovery. Hellfire is capable of igniting widespread flash fire when combined with various anointed oils, spawning regular fire to rampage all in it’s path within a 20m radius and is twice as difficult to extinguish.

  • Mithril +

    MithrilRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Mithril is intended to be a rare and expensive item and as such is limited in quantity. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this subtance.

A silvery-blue metal thought to possess legendary powers, Mithril has been the prize of Dwarves and Dragons in myth and legend. Some say that even the gods themselves are the source of gifts made from this fantastical material. Its ore within the earth is rare, and found in such small quantities that it is thought that raw mithril ore does not exist in proper veins, and is instead the remnants of ancient mithril objects being reclaimed from long buried and forgotten hoards. Due to its scarcity and the fact that when located it is quickly over-mined, many ‘new’ mithril objects are made from deconstructing objects that currently exist and are made of this metal.

    The Legendary Metal

Myths and legends of mithril include stories of chain-shirts that protect its wearer from any injury and weapons that could withstand the mights of giants, dragons and demons. Much like any other story, exaggeration is always included for the benefit of the listener. Mithril, like any other metal, has its specific strengths and weaknesses. Smiths and warriors aware of these pros and cons are capable of crafting and utilizing mithril to the fullest of its capabilities.

    Weight & Durability

A common property attributed to Mithril is its weightlessness though this too is an exaggeration on the part of its user. Due to being slightly lighter and less-dense than simple steel, a smith can forge a well-balanced blade that moves easily in the wielder's hand or armor that barely stresses a soldier’s back...all without sacrificing the durability offered by thick plates of steel. Mithril possesses a durability that is only slightly greater than steel’s, though is capable of holding its shape or keeping a keen edge for far longer even with the roughness of battle. Mithril is favored for lighter weapons such as thrusting swords and daggers as it can punch through weaker metals while being easier to manipulate and handle due to its lighter weight. However, striking the flat of a mithril blade can break it just as easily as one would damage a steel sword.

Forging, Working the metal, and Maintenance

Mithril is not a metal that any smith can work simply. Some smiths undergo years studying the techniques for working with mithril, spend dozens of silver coins acquiring the set-up and materials for its handling, often going an entire lifetime without ever once seeing or handling the metal up close. Due to its unique properties, mithril takes careful, consistent amounts of high heat in order to bring it to a workable state and it could take several months or even years to make a weapon or a piece of armor entirely from mithril - if enough metal was acquired. For maintaining one’s piece of mithril equipment, simple whetstones would not be enough to sharpen a blade - you are more likely to break the stone than keep the edge of your sword. It would require several return trips to the forge for a smith to re-heat and soften the metal for it to be reworked.

  • Witch’s Yew +

Witch's YewRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Witch's Yew is highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this substance.

This tree grows only in areas highly saturated in magic and some Mystfolk consider it alive and a creature unto itself. Due to its several unique properties that develop in objects made from the wood of this tree, it is highly sought after by wizards. It is rumored that only a handful of trees exist within the entire realm and their guardians have them greatly protected. Their exact locations are unknown.

    Magical Resistance

Objects made of Witch's Yew possess a natural resistance against external magical effects primarily due to growing and thriving in an already magically saturated environment. Most magics are rendered completely ineffective against such objects though this also results in making it nearly impossible to enchant an item made of this wood.

    Physical Resistance

Another interesting result of the environment in which this wood grows is that it contains a heightened durability to physical attempts to break or alter its shape. It is said to be stronger than any wood in a mortal forest and it shows - one can compare the durability of an item made of of this material to something made of hardened steel.

    Sentience

Witch's Yew possess a vague intelligence to it, with each ‘piece’ made from this wood developing a sort of personality separate from the parenting tree - which in itself has a fae-like mentality to its behavior. This allows articles shaped from this wood to recognize an ‘Owner’ towards whom it becomes very attached and protective of. These items would magically follow their owners everywhere and come when called/summoned no matter what distance of obstacles separate them. This could be in the form of magical teleportation, intelligently navigating a maze or even not-so-subtly smashing straight through walls. This sentience also leads to difficulty towards an object's owner, with the wooden object being difficult to control and temperamental when agitated.

  • Wolvesbane +

    WolvesbaneRestriction Level: High - Restricted.

Reason for restriction: Wolvesbane is highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain this subtance.

Monkshood and aconite, commonly given the name “Wolvesbane” due to its knack at injuring wild wolves, is highly effective at dealing with the supernatural predators - Lycan and Garou - and claims its disastrous effects to the wolfkin that contact it. While still dangerous to all creatures, it impacts the Wolf-Shifters the most.

    General Toxicity

Handling or being exposed to this plant can still cause harmful effects to those not of Wolfkin origin.

    Wolf-Shifter Allergy

The Lycans and Garou of Eyr have an innate weakness to this plant, with the scents it puts out being a strong disrupter of the Wolfkin’s senses. The general effects of the plant effect Wolfkin much the same, though only in fresh leaf form. Hanging dried plants is typically a warning to Wolfkin that Wolvesbane could be in use, and holds little effect other than a deterring scent and instigating a minor reaction of watery or itchy eyes and mouth. Coming near or in contact with the fresh leaves can cause more extreme effects in addition to the normal symptoms, such as a loss of scent, taste, or cloudy vision. Stronger doses or lengthy exposure can also bring about extreme muscular pain, shortness of breath, and heavy perspiration. Due to its harmful properties, being close to or affected by Wolvesbane makes it difficult to gather/maintain the focus necessary to use a Wolfkin gift as well as disrupt the shapeshifting process. This latter effect may be of some use to Wolfkin or those hunting them, as a carefully mixed potion can prevent a Wolfkin from shifting - even under the full moon - at the cost of temporary sickness and pain.

    Scarcity, Harvesting, and Preparation

While any careful herbologist can grow, care for, and tend to it like any other herb, wollfsbane poses a greater challenge to raise and work with. This is primarily because the plant is not native nor adaptible to Eyr's balmy evironment. Additionally, because the plant only holds its greatest effect upon Wolfkin when freshly picked, it would be difficult to grow and sustain such a crop as well as hazardous to the tender’s health. Due to this, Wolvesbane is more likely to be harvested and dried for its use as a deterrent rather than to be actively used as a weapon.

Controlled:

Controlled substances can be possessed under certain limitations / restrictions.

  • Five Elemental Crystal Shards +

    Restriction Level: High.

Reason for restriction: Five Element Crystal Shards are highly powerful and is also intended to be a rare item. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without admin approval.

In Mystara legend there are stories that exist about the creation of the realm and its godly occupants. Demigods created to guard the realm are said to have presided over the five original races that inhabited the islands, and made use of an artifact that was forged from the powerful elemental magics of Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and the ethereal Mysts themselves. This crystal came to be known as the Five-Element Crystal, at least up until it was shattered at the end of the Gorgaronn war and thought to be lost. Scattered across the realm, and found by few, are splintered fragments of this crystal, still possessing unique powers.

Each shart possesses an elemental affinity towards one of the five Mystaran Elements. These energies, while potent, are volatile and unpredictable. A use of these crystals would be all-or-nothing, and they might even be prone to accidental discharge.

    Physical Frailty

The shards of the Five Element Crystal do not possess the same strength as the full Artifact, both magically and physically. Due to the overwhelming nature of the magics within them, the small shards remain brittle and easy to shatter with any direct force upon them or sudden impact. This can be disastrous, as doing so is the only means of releasing the energies within them, whether it be for benefit or accidental harm. > Elemental Effects- Each shard possesses one of these, determined randomly by Mystara Dice die roll unless otherwise awarded.

Fire- Thought to be in the care of Dragons, the shards of the Diamond, Amber, and Ruby shards of the crystal hold the power of fire.

(1-10) Detonation - The shard explodes in a roar of flame when shattered, accompanied by a thunderous noise, a blinding flash, and a brief wash of searing flames and force to scorch and knock about those in the area.

(11-20) Display - The shard gives off in several colorful bursts of sparks and tendrils of flame in any directions as it slowly propels itself in a slight arc from where it was shattered until it reaches the ground again. While impressive to look at, the sparks and tongues of flame can sear even the most resilient sources.

Water-Held by the Merfolk in the past, these Turquoise and sapphire shards are imbued with the magics of water.

(21-30) Sooth - A sprinkle of water and a whisper come from the shard when shattered, leaving a small surface wound healed and the pain temporarily numbed.

(31-40) Whip - A lashing tendril of water coils around the area of the shattered shard like an angry serpent, stinging any whom draw near with high-pressure sprays.

Earth- Rumor has it that the Elven Tari’s Crown Jewels are fashioned from these shards, they possess powerful earthen magics.

(41-50) Call - Plants, earth or stone in the area of the shattered shard grow and shape themselves into an animalesque form or a hazardous area. For the next few minutes (3 posts, 1 hour RP max) it obeys the whims of the former shardbearer.

(51-60) Fragment - The ground beneath the shattered shard groans, cracks, and splits into a small gorge or sinkhole for several minutes (5 posts, 1 hour RP Max), causing difficulty of travel or perhaps trapping someone inside. When the zone fades, the earth fills in from the bottom up, lifting anything within the gorge back to the surface.

Air-A treasure to many of human royalty, these shards hold powers of air.

(61-70) Storm - A miniature stormcloud boils forth from the shattered shard, assailing those nearby with forceful gale (1-30), bolts of lightning (31-60), an imprisoning vortex (61-90), or all three (91-100)

(71-80) Lift - This shattered shard imbues surrounds the former shardbearer with a swirling gust of wind, lifting them off of the ground and permitting limited flight and levitation for a few minutes (3 posts, 1 hour RP max)

Myst-Scattered and buried around the Mystfolk woods, these shards are empowered by the Mysts themselves.

(81-90) Amplify - Augments the former shard-bearers magical ability. The next spell cast within the next few minutes (3 posts) holds much greater potency (treated as casted with 1 more prep).

(91-100) Elsewhere - Shattering this shard causes the former shardbearer to vanish in a wispy silver smoke and reappear elsewhere on the island. Consent required for leaving a scene. Roll on Mystara Dice for where you end up.

  • Flash Powder +

    Flash PowderRestriction Level: Moderate.

Reason for restriction: Flash Powder is an advanced technology / alchemy for Eyr's time period and as such, is intended to be a rare item. Characters may obtain this substance via Gnome Depot or The Crone’s Eye Magic Shop. Flash Powder is intended as a light explosive for fireworks, displays, loud bangs, flashes, but NOT a substitute for guns, dynamite, black powder or any such heavy explosives.

Flash Powder is a substance composed of saltpeter, sulfur, and a few other compounds. When detonated it tends to burn white, and produce small loud explosions and the trademark smell of sulfur. The addition of minerals can be used to tint the explosions a variety of colors, or to add effects such as eye irritants or clouds of smoke. Flash powder is often used in entertainment displays and for fun little 'rockets'.

While it is a light explosive, it is still dangerous. Explosions of flash powder near the body can cause burns, blow off fingers, deafen and burst eardrums, and temporarily blind. It is for these reasons that flash powder is sometimes used in combat to distract, temporarily stun, or startle enemies. Pictured right is a typical flash powder explosion.

Flash powder cannot be applied in highly advanced technological crafts to produce something anachronistic with Eyr times, such as canons, guns, or grenades.

  • Holy Water +

    Holy WaterRestriction Level: Moderate.

Reason for restriction: Holy water cannot be obtained without admin clearance. Characters may not assume to have possession of this substance without obtaining permission from an Admin or through the Token System.

There are many possible uses for holy water. Use in protection spells, the creation of holy weapons, and of course direct damage against undead and demons.

    1. 1) Crafting Holy Weapons: several decanters might be needed, depending on the size and power of the weapon. As the glowing weapon is pulled from the forge, it is tempered again and again as the blessed water is carefully poured over it.
    2. 2) Protection spells: A drop or two is needed to erect a barrier of protection around the caster, protecting her against evil/ unholy creatures for a time (determined by the spell itself)
    3. 3) Direct Damage: A vial of holy water splashed on an unholy creature would cause severe burns to it.... especially undead and demons. The effects of holy water would be akin to wolfsbane to demons and undead... and ingesting it would be near fatal. Though, the holy water must always remain in its pure form to be effective. That is, you can not add it to a drink or food, as only by direct application is holy water ever effective as a weapon.
    4. 4) Holy blessings: A drop or two is needed. This can be used to perform holy blessings. These beneficial spells have many uses. From helping to fight off the effects of fear attacks, to allowing a person to overcome the mental anguish from a traumatic event. Blessing spells are cast before combat, and the duration lasts from a few minutes to permanent.
    5. 5) Removal of Curses/Possessions: Holy water can be an important component in exorcisms or the removal of curses from a person. The entire decanter most likely being used over a period of several hours, with a long drawn out ritual.

Holy water probably doesn’t do anything on its own. That is if a regular person is simply drinking it, it won’t impart any beneficial effect, as its use comes from its application as a catalyst component for many different spells and rituals making it indispensable.

Holy water can be fouled easily. Any kind of impurity directly introduced to it, will make it useless, thus the importance of a crystal decanter, obtainable at The Crone’s Eye Magic Shop. This specially-prepared container protects the water from such things, and even holds in the divine energies bestowed upon the water by the priest/ess’ blessings. The decanter must be kept clean and free of defects.

  • Ironwood +

    Iron WoodRestriction Level: Moderate.

Reason for restriction: Iron Wood can only be obtained with admin clearance, or through the use of the Token System. Please note - because Iron Wood transforms quickly, you'd probably want to coordinate with a blacksmith prior to obtaining the Iron Wood Plank .

Deep in the southern jungles of Eyr, the rare Iron Wood Trees grow in small and scattered clusters. Iron Wood is a dark brown wood with grains that are dense and tightly packed into sweeping curves; these make Iron Wood hard yet lightweight.

Gathering Iron Wood is only slightly more difficult than normal wood. However, shaping the iron wood into the desired shape requires the utmost haste. When Iron Wood is separated from the tree, it immediately begins to harden. After a day, it becomes as hard as iron, and cannot be shaped using techniques for wood. Unfortunately, it cannot be shaped by melting, either. It is wood, and will still burn.

Iron Wood, just as other woods, can succumb to rot, fire, or termites.

  • Silver +

    Pure SilverRestriction Level: Moderate.

Reason for restriction: Silver is often abused in roleplay and not legitimately acquired through RP. Silver is used in moderation to balance Lycan power. Common coin silver is relatively easy to obtain, but less effective. Pure Silver is restricted, but more effective. Characters may not assume to have possession of pure silver without admin approval. Players may use tokens to obtain pure silver. Common silver may be obtained through RP.

    Silver in Roleplay

Silver in Eyr is primarily used for foreign currency, the occasional piece of jewellery and for balancing the powerful lycan and vampire races. Please contact an admin if you have any questions about Silver that are not covered here.

    Silver Control

In Eyr, silver is a semi-controlled substance. New arriving characters may not possess silver in greater purity than coin silver (82%) and Colloidal / Powdered silver does not exist. Otherwise, your character should acquire his/her silver through legitimate means. Should it be discovered that it was metagamed or invented out of thin air, and has passed through many hands and affected roleplay, all RP in that storyline may be voided by GMs and put you in the hot-seat. Don’t do it. This includes but is not limited to Mining on your own, Elemental Magical Ability and simply having the metal in question without legitimately acquiring it.

    Quick Facts:

    • Coin Silver is 82% Purity
    • Sterling / Jewelry / Plating Silver is 92% Purity
    • All silver is harmful to Lycans and Vampires, by degree of purity.
    • Creates wounds that cannot be healed by natural regeneration in Lycans and Vampires.
    • Is typically not an insta-kill or deus-ex-machina item. (unless a player consents to beheading with a silver-plated sword, for example)
    • Specially trained clerics can heal silver wounds.
    • Colloidal and Powdered Silver are NOT permitted.
    • Silver shavings are permitted.
    • Characters may melt and repurpose silver.
    • Sterling silver is too soft for weaponry, but can be used to plate it.

    Silver F.A.Q.

    Where can I procure silver?

Silver will darken the day of a number of races within the realm, and as such should be quested through legitimate means. For example: Gnome Depot, Blacksmiths (who gain their raw product from foreign traders). Silver is a metal that gets shipped in and is then distributed to the various blacksmiths around the Isle. It is brought in as unrefined ore then smelted into silver for later uses in various different smithing techniques, plating, and even some jewelry. Traditionally, silversmiths mostly made "silverware" (cutlery, tableware, bowls, candlesticks and such). Only in more recent times has silversmithing become mainly work in jewelry, as much less solid silver tableware is now handmade.

What is the Purity of silver in Eyr?

For foreign and Shalan’ti currency the purity of silver is 82% pure silver. The other 18% are other various metals that give the coin its sturdiness, and its weight. Much like modern day currency, the purity is cut with other metals in order to keep the actual value of the coin correct as to not cause inflation within the currency system.

Can it be melted down in order to create other items?

Yes, coin can be melted down, but keep in mind that the silver will -not- be pure. It will still be at 82% purity. That however, should be brought up with the blacksmiths in order to complete this task. Though, keep in mind, silver is a -soft- metal and does not have the ability to hold a sharpened edge. A blade can be coated in silver, however the blades edge should be left steel or iron so that sharpening can take place and the blades edge remains pristine.

What effect does silver have on Lycans?

Lycans have had an age-old aversion to silver. Should a wolf come into contact with silver, it will burn their skin, leaving horrible marks upon their flesh and can cause serious side effects with natural regenerative healing should they be run through with a silver coated blade. It prevents the wolf from fully healing should the silver be within their system. If a limb should be cut off with a silver implement, the limb cannot grow back. There are ways to heal silver through magical means, however there are very few within the realm that can accomplish this task. They must be trained in the art of healing with silver in order to properly extract it from an affected wolf. For wolves that already are trained in the art of silver healing, there are severe drawbacks and costs to using this particular healing technique. It can cause a myriad of permanent effects upon the character or even something as severe as death. In regards to the Vampires on the isle, silver will also burn their flesh, much like a Lycans, and it will also drain their power in terms of magic, or even natural abilities like hypnosis or shapeshifting and especially healing.

So, you’re saying I can kill a Lycan or Vampire with any silver?

No. The severity of the injury will be dependent on the purity of the silver in which the wound was inflicted. The higher the purity, say jeweler quality (or ‘sterling’), the more detrimental the injury can become. If you have a very low grade silver, the injury will not be as severe upon the wolf or vampire in question.

Hey look! I have silver dust, can I use that as a defense against Lycans and Vampires?

Silver dust is extremely rare. Silver powder and colloidal silver requires complex alchemical steps to create which go beyond medieval technologies. Colloidal silver is not permitted in Eyr because of the complex alchemical technology required to create a substance that is broken down to the molecular level. It supersedes dark ages technology and it is highly unlikely Eyr is populated with chemistry geniuses. One could make silver shavings, crush them down into a rough dust; however, it will be very difficult to apply in a harmful manner. Crushed silver cannot be applied via atomization, gas, liquification or injection the way colloidal silver would be.
